"Frosting Delivery Vehicles"

Whoopie pie bill may lead to food fight

I support this 110%. In fact, if we changed the name from "whoopie pies" to "frosting delivery vehicles", "pure, edible nostalgia", or "filling that has a tiny dash of tolerance, a bit of compromise, a lot of patience, and realization that we all love Maine and want to do the best for our people", I'd add an additional 10-20 percentage points of support.

Montreal

I went to Montreal and all I got was an original studio recording. In a month or so. That's the plan, at least.

My flight Wednesday night was canceled on the runway. If it had taken off 30 minutes earlier, we would have been golden. As it was, it took about three hours to get up to Maryland because of the weather. Amanda's house didn't have power and my cell phone was low on battery, but with a flurry of communication between the US, Canada, and Air Canada, I was able to get a flight the following morning. After further delays and a 26 minute flight from Ottawa to Montreal, I was on the ground at my intended destination by mid afternoon.

Ryan, Sarah, and Adam had been working in the studio for a few hours already, and we got in a couple more before finishing for the day. Unfortunately that was the only day for Sarah and Matt before they headed off for skiing in Vermont, but the rest of us put in probably six hours Friday and another three or so on Saturday.

At the end of that, we had recorded and decided on final versions for all of the tracks, done some overdubbing, and discussed where the rest should go. We couldn't have asked for someone better than Adam to work with. He, Sarah, and Ryan will do some more work in the upcoming weeks and hopefully shortly after that we'll have finalized tracks. Pretty exciting. Stay tuned to more on that.

Otherwise, we had a good amount of time to wander around the city and enjoy the evenings. Thumbs up for Hurley's.

Old Montreal

This reminded me of some of the whimsical modern art I saw in Beijing.

Open markets are the best. That and smelly cheese.

The legendary Chaz.

The illustrious Java.

I also finally finished Kafka's The Castle which, although not long, is quite dense and not something that found its way to the top of my to-do list during free time. His descriptions of bustling scenes, bureaucracy, and absurd power relationships are very engaging, but I found the actual characters and plot to be pretty forgettable (perhaps that was intentional). It's not clear what Kafka had in mind for the book and, given that he died while writing it, it required a lot of editing to be publishable. This version was translated by Willa and Edwin Muir with additional material translated by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser. My mom's old copy and what wiki calls the "definitive edition".

So, very good trip, and I'm glad that we were still able to get mostly everything done that we wanted to despite the nearly 24 hour delay. And I saw a good amount of the city despite spending most of the time in a basement music studio. It feels good actually to go through with a project that started in concept nearly 2.5 years ago. And it was great to hang out with Ryan before his move to São Paulo.
